This is very sad news, but as time moves on someone is bound to pass away. Adam Yauch, one of the co-founders of the Beastie Boys has passed away. It isn’t clear if he passed from salivary gland cancer–he was diagnosed in 2009–but it can be assumed that he did. The Beastie Boys were just inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, it seems like they are inducting everybody into the hall of fame, I don’t get it. There needs to be a separate–yes, I know–hall of fame for Hip-Hop. The Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame will absorb all genres, and water down the contributions of specific groups. You know I’m right, so don’t even.
That being said, the Beastie Boys are a part of hip-hop history. They were a popular all white/Jewish hip-hop trio that gained respect by combining party, funny, and clever rhymes with hip-hop beats and rock, or punk music. Sweet! If you have never listened to the Beastie Boys, please check them out. They are some o.g.’s that are sure to please!
After a 10 year disappearing act, D’Angelo will be performing at the summer 2012 Essence Music Festival. Yay! I have missed D’Angelo! The music business is hard on artists–I speak from experience. I am not quite sure what happened with D’Angelo, he’s had some problems with the law, but his last album Voodoo, released in 2000, was amazing!!! I still love this album. It is sexy, sweet…I just can’t say enough about it. I even listen to his first release Brown Sugar. I mean come on, don’t you ladies remember his video for “How does it feel?” If you don’t know what I am talking about…all I gotta say is “Day-um!!” Check it out!
So if you love music as much as I do, but have never listened to the Beastie Boys, or D’Angelo check them out. You won’t regret it 🙂
